FAQs and Tips Regarding Septic Systems

    • What causes the thick crust in my tank?

The crust is organic material that’s congealed into a solid. This can indicate bacterial deficiency.

    • I had my tank pumped out last week. Is it possible that it’s full already?

It's possible and necessary. Septic tanks are designed to operate full for proper separation of water and solids.

    • Can I put anything in my tank to avoid pumping?

No. Some of the material in the tank is not biodegradable and just be pumped from the system by an experienced firm like ABC Cesspool & Septic Pumping. Your satisfaction is guaranteed!

    • My system just backed up for the first time in years. Why should I start maintaining now?

Even though the backup may have been caused by broken pipes, tree roots in the lines, or other causes, it’s possible that this backup is the first sign of system failure.

Follow The Dos and Don'ts of Septic Care

    1. Don’t flush cigarettes, sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, or other inorganic materials down the drain.
    2. Don’t overload your septic system. Use water sparingly. Don't put medicines, paint or thinner, disinfectant, pesticides, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, etc., down the drain.
    3. Don’t drive, park, or plant trees and shrubs over your system.
    4. Keep good repair and maintenance records.
    5. Check all plumbing fixtures for leaks.
    6. Pump out or inspect your system every two to three years.
    7. Remove your garbage disposal. Unless your system was designed for one, use it sparingly.
    8. Know where your septic system is located so you can see changes in the surface appearance.
